Exercising your eyes frequently is an important part of eye care in Cape Cod, MA. While these exercises might not be able to eliminate any eye conditions that already exist, they will play a key role in strengthening your eyes, which can help prevent your vision from worsening. Follow along with this guide to learn about some easy eye exercises that you can try at home, and the best ways to warm up your eyes before performing these exercises.
Get your eyes ready
You will need to prepare your eyes before you begin exercising them. To stimulate and improve the blood circulation to your eyes, gently massage your eyelids by rotating your fingers in a circular motion for one to two minutes. You can also do a full-face massage, or alternate with hot and cold compresses to stimulate both the face and the skin around your eyes.
Start by sitting in a chair or positioning yourself in front of a blank wall. Place your thumb about 10 inches in front of your face, while focusing on it for between 10 and 15 seconds. You can then focus on an object that is five to 10 feet away, again for 10 to 15 seconds. Finally, focus on an object that is 10 to 20 feet in front of you for a final 10 to 15 seconds. Refocus on your thumb, and then repeat the intervals five times.
Directional eye movements
Just as it is important to achieve a full range of motion when exercising your body, your eyes too need to be moved in all directions for the best results. Staring straight ahead of you and without moving your head, begin these exercises by moving your eyes to the left and focusing on whatever you see. Then move your eyes so you are looking to the right, alternating to the left again and back five times total. Then shift your focus down, and alternate looking down and up three times. Lastly, look down and to the left, then shift diagonally to look up and to the right, and repeat five times before going diagonally in the opposite direction.
A great way to make sure your eyes are being exercised fully is to trace figure eights on the ground. Picture a large figure eight on the floor about 10 feet in front of your eyes, then outline the figure eight slowly using only your eyes. Go one way for a few minutes, and then switch going in the opposite direction for a couple more minutes.
