What is dark mode?
First introduced by Apple as an optional feature called Night Shift, dark mode is a system-wide shift in the visual spectrum of your phone’s apps. Essentially, the color scheme is swapped, so typically white backgrounds appear black, and black text appears white. On screens where inverting the colors isn’t an option, Night Shift dims the display.
Since the release of Night Shift, dark mode has become a standard feature on smartphones of every brand.
What are the supposed benefits of dark mode?
When asked, “Does dark mode help your eyes?”, manufacturers across the board have responded in the affirmative. Regular computer monitors rely on a bright white screen that’s based in blue light. According to these companies, prolonged exposure to this kind of light can cause blurry vision, headaches and eye irritation.
Dark mode is the cure for these symptoms—or so say the inventors.
Is that true, though?
Though most creative and technology professionals would cheer the virtues of dark mode, not everyone is on board. As Stanford ophthalmologist Euna Koo told reporters, “I do not think dark mode affects eye health in any way given the data that is out there in the literature.”
Though one study has linked eye strain to the blue light of traditional monitors, still more research indicates no link between eye strain and the blue light of monitors.
Dark mode is rough for astigmatism
For those who suffer from astigmatism, dark mode may actually act as an extra hurdle when reading. People who live with astigmatism have trouble focusing on text in general, but light text against a dark background is especially tiring.
The one actual benefit of dark mode
There is one semi-proven benefit to dark mode. The blue-based light of traditional monitors has been proven to interrupt a body’s normal sleeping rhythms, making it tougher to get a good night’s sleep. Dark mode makes it easier for your eyes to transition from the blue light of a monitor to a peaceful slumber.
