In the decades since the FDA approved the use of LASIK, the innovative surgical technique has become increasingly popular. Proponents of the surgery claim that LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) can solve optical issues ranging from nearsightedness to astigmatism.
But is LASIK good or bad for you? Here are some pros and cons to help you decide before scheduling a LASIK appointment in Cape Cod.
What is LASIK?
For those unaware, LASIK is a type of surgery that harnesses the precision of a laser to shape the cornea. The goal is to eliminate imperfections in the surface and shape of your eye to allow it to focus light better. When utilized correctly, LASIK has been shown to reduce the ill effects of hyperopia, myopia and even astigmatism.
Is LASIK painful?
After a series of consultations, the LASIK procedure is performed in two stages. The first stage detaches the cornea. The second stage adjusts the shape of the cornea using a laser. While most patients find the surgery uncomfortable, numbing agents used on the eye dull all of the pain associated with the surgery. Best of all, the whole process can take as little as five minutes.
The aftermath of LASIK, however, is a bit more involved. For the next 24 hours post-surgery, you can expect your eyes to burn a little bit as they adjust. That said, this pain is usually fleeting and gone entirely by the next day.
The first two weeks
The benefits of LASIK in Cape Cod should be evident from the outset. Most patients experience improved vision inside 24 hours. That said, initially, some people may experience hazy vision for up to two weeks following the surgery.
Some patients also have to deal with a side effect known as subconjunctival hemorrhages. Typically painless, subconjunctival hemorrhages manifest as red spots at the corner of your eyes. They shouldn’t interfere with vision in the slightest.
Dry eyes are common
The most common side effect of LASIK surgery is dry eyes. This symptom can last up to six months after the surgery. In a handful of cases, LASIK can result in eyes that have chronic trouble with lubrication. That said, this side effect is quickly relieved with eyedrops from the brand of your choice.
